VPN stands for virtual private network. People having know how of networking, network security and other related fields would have a fair idea of what a virtual private network is and how does it work. For others, I will explain virtual private networks in detail now.You may also check out our article Top 10 reasons to buy VPN.
What is VPN
Virtual private networks are really simple to understand and very easy to obtain too. We live in the world and every one has an address, all communication or letters that are sent to you are by that address. Similarly we have an address in the world of internet as well. When we browse or download or upload files, data is sent to us or transmitted by us. All this transmitted or received data travels and reaches its destination on the basis of that internet address called the ‘Internet Protocol’ address or the IP address. This IP address is of the form xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx. The IP addresses change on the basis of country, region and area. The internet protocol address is actually the identifier of your country or geographical location.
Now some times, for certain reasons that will be discussed ahead in the article, we need to mask, hide or ‘apparently’ change the internet protocol address and this is where the concepts of virtual private networks come into play.
Virtual private networks are actually networks that hide your original IP address and makes it appear as if it is from another region or location of the world. Why would we want to do that manipulation, we will see that in a later part.
Lets suppose you have an IP address of UK and you want one of USA ip. What virtual private networks do is that they hook up your system to a system in UK. The system in USA does all the browsing and surfing for you and sends all the data back your system in UK. This way all accessed internet services think that you have a USA IP address. This is the way virtual private networks work.
Advantages of Virtual Private Network
After getting a through understanding of the virtual private networks functionality and working, the next important point that comes to mind is for what purpose virtual private networks are used and why people are buying its subscriptions so urgently.
Actually there are a wide variety of websites and internet services that are available in some specific countries and not in others, due to this reason people often want to change their IP addresses to those in other regions where the content is easily available.
So its now easy to understand that virtual private networks are used to access internet services in an unrestricted and secure way.

Hi, I have a question and I hope I don’t sound stupid but they say the only stupid question is a question not asked so here goes. Reading up on VPN am I getting the right impression that I can get internet thru it like I would an ISP? Only difference is the IP address it puts out and the other little neat things it does? Or do I still have to have an internet provider like ATT, Verizon, etc.?
hi babyduc.
no.vpn is not an internernet connection.you connect to vpn with your existing ISP.
Can I use this VPN service from Nokia 5800 phone?
On my phone I am using SymVpn software which is PPTP VPN client.
There are now good new services that use encrypted tunnels for better anonymity and security.
With http://pirateray.com/proxy you are fully protected, because after installing a simple program a secure and encrypted tunnel will appear from your PC to external servers. This way if even somebody will catch the traffic, he can do nothing with it because the channel is encrypted. Also unlike other services, besides regular servers Pirateray has servers with dynamic migrating IP, which doesn’t allow to blacklist these IPs and therefore limit users for this reason. This way you may download anonymously from other users and your ISP, with the use of secure servers around the world that do not store your data.
Easy to install and free to try 1 week.
